#26 Exmoor coast
May 12, 2026
Every year for Jasmine's birthday we have gone on a weekend trip (usually camping), and this was the first time we got to do it as a trio! It also happened to be Pemi's 11 month birthday... just one month until he is 1 year old!
We have been on the lookout for campsites in beautiful places that are somewhat easily reachable by public transportation as we are not yet ready to do a backpacking trip with Pemi. Andrew found a gorgeous campsite on top of a hill at the Eastern edge of the Exmoor national park, at the start of the South West Coastal Path. It was a new area for us and it exceeded expectations!
On the second day we took the bus to Porlock and then walked the coastal path back to our campsite. It was a beautiful day and we were buzzing with the discovery of this place. The beaches were made of beautiful purple rocks, the hilly cliffs were steep and hazy with the purple hues of bluebells, the woods were lush and full of ferns. We bought a bottle of refreshingly tart apple juice from a local farm, had a picnic looking out at the Bristol channel, and Pemi rolled around in the forest floor giddy at his first encounter with pinecones.
It also seems to be the beginning of the through hiking/backpacking season and we saw so many people going west on their first day on the South West Coast Path. We ended the day in the sun in our campsite watching a large group of buddhists on a walking tour put up their tents next to ours.
