#34 Rain on the North Downs Way
August 29, 2026
Back to the asynchronous adventure mode: first one parent goes for a run and the other hikes with Pemi, then we switch off, have lunch, spend time together outdoor.
Today, Pemi's hike was an out and back from Wye to the top of the Devil's Kneading Trough (what a name!) along the North Downs Way, which is a long distance national trail from the Surrey Hills south of London down to Dover. We have hiked a section near London on Pemi's very first weekend adventure! Downs is the name of a geographical feature: chalky hills commonly found in southern England, the name probably deriving from the Celtic "dun" - hill. This is probably the same etymology as the word "town" as forts and then towns were often built on top of hills!
It was our first time using the rain cover for the poco, and it made for a cosy little chamber for Pemi to take a little snooze listening to the pattering rain as Jasmine climbed up the ridge. He then hiked back down with Andrew to meet Jasmine after her run at "The tickled trout". This place really has some standout naming practices!
