What's going on in there?
By Lise Eliot, 2000
We’ve been in awe watching Pemi develop cognitively by observing his evolving behaviours, but what’s going on in there? What changes in his brain underlie his increasing dexterity, the attentiveness with which he looks at things, the dance of his fingers and the drive to move?
This book was a review of the literature on sensory, motor and cognitive development. While it is sometimes dissatisfying for us to read popular science books on neuroscience, Jasmine found this one very interesting. The author described developmental steps but also how the research was conducted. This is not trivial because you can't ask a baby if they can see or hear something. Many studies instead measure how long a baby looks at something or the frequency at which they suck on a pacifier (a sign that they find it interesting and novel).
As a bonus, Pemi was obsessed with the large baby face on the cover of the book the whole time I was reading it!
